Rules and FAQ
Rules
Eligibility
- The exchange will cover both romantic/sexual (/) and platonic (&) ships of any size.
- One-sided hatred is within the scope of the exchange.
- Self-hatred is within the scope of the exchange. Please nominate as "Character A & Self".
- Three-character nominations (A/B/C) will be accepted. Optional details asking for Character A to hate Character B but not Character C are within the scope of the exchange. As long as a request involves someone in the relationship tag hating someone else in the relationship tag, it's fair game.
- Mixed ship and gen nominations (A/B & C) will be accepted.
- Accepted mediums: fanfic, fanart, podfic
Nominations
- You may nominate 7 fandoms and 7 relationships per fandom.
- When nominating, please pick a specific media type instead of All Media Types and/or Related Fandoms where possible.
- Mods may edit nominations before accepting them.
- Mods will post questions and clarifications to the DW community. If your nomination has been left unreviewed for a long time, please check the DW community in case a clarification was needed.
- Crossovers, original works, and RPF are permitted. RPF characters should be above 18 and famous in their own right.
- Full nomination guidelines are here.
Requests
- You may request 3-10 fandoms with a minimum of 1 relationship, 1 media type, 1 archive warning, and 1 "outcome of hatred" tag (or any).
- Duplicate fandom requests containing different relationship/media type/"outcome of hatred" tags are allowed, as long as your requests contain at least 3 distinct fandoms.
If you have written a letter, there is a space on the request form to link it. - DNWs: If there is anything you do not want (DNW) to receive in your gift, please mention it (clearly marked as a DNW) in your optional details. Your creator will be required not to include DNWs entered in the Optional Details box.
Offers
- You may offer 3-10 fandoms and a minimum of 1 relationship, 1 media type, 1 archive warning, and 1 "outcome of hatred" tag (or any).
- Duplicate fandom offers containing different relationship/media type/"outcome of hatred" tags are allowed, as long as your offers contain at least 3 distinct fandoms.
Matching
- Matching is OR. Your creator will match your requests, and your recipient will match your offers, on at least 1 fandom tag and at least 1 relationship tag within that fandom.
- We will also be matching on media type, archive warnings, and outcome of hatred tags ("Hate that starts", "Hate that stays the same", and "Hate that ends").
Work Minimum Requirements
- Fanfiction: A finished piece of at least 500 words
- Fanart: Finished lineart or nice sketch on unlined paper
- Podfic: 300 words or 3 minutes for new fic, and 1,000 words or 10 minutes for recording preexisting fic.
Your Assignment
- If you received an assignment that does not match at least one of your offers using the criteria above, please contact the mods immediately.
Assignments are secret. Please do not discuss your assignment (in public or where your recipient might see it). - If you have a question about your assignment, please contact the mods, who will pass on your question to your recipient.
- Please respect your recipient’s DNWs.
Defaulting and Pinch Hits
- If you are unable to fulfill your assignment, please go to your assignments page and click "Default" on your Hate Exchange assignment. This informs the collection maintainers that you will not fulfill your assignment, and gives us time to find a pinch hitter for your recipient.
- Pinch hits will be posted to the DW comm. To claim, please comment on the post (comments will be screened) or email the mods. You do not need to be signed up to the exchange to claim a PH.
- No-show defaulters will owe a work to the collection if they want to be unbanned from subsequent rounds of the exchange.
Treating
- Treats are extra gifts given to participants or to the collection.
- Treats do not have to meet the minimum requirements, but should otherwise respect the rules of the exchange.
- Treats will not be counted as assignments in this exchange.
- To post your treat, add your work to the collection and gift it to the recipient.
FAQ
What counts as hate?
"Hatred" includes any relationship with conflict that leads to characters having negative emotions about each other. In addition to intense dislike, contempt and disgust would also qualify! We want the whole spectrum of people feeling super negative about each other.
Circumstantial enemies (fighting on opposite sides of a war) who don’t actively dislike each other would not count-- it’s important that the character(s) involved feel hatred, not just that they be in conflict.
What are the "outcome of hatred" tags?
These describe how you want the relationship to develop over the course of the fanwork.
- Hate that starts indicates that you would like the relationship to start positive or neutral and then become negative. It might be used to request a friends-to-enemies work or a work about two strangers meeting for the first time and hating each other.
- Hate that exists and continues indicates that you would like the relationship to be negative when the work starts and is still negative when the work ends. It might be used to request a work where the characters remain enemies throughout but the hatred decreases, increases, or stays the same.
- Hate that ends indicates that you would like the relationship to start negative and end positive or neutral. It might be used to request an enemies-to-friends work.
